Theobald Boehm, born in 1794, was a composer, industrialist, goldsmith, and flutist from Bavaria, Germany. From 1821 to 1831, Boehm traveled Europe on concert tours performing his own compositions and began to use his own constructed flutes in 1828. In 1831, he invented new mechanics on the flute that allowed keys beyond fingers reach to be controlled. Boehm continued to apply variations to his invention, creating the metal cylinder flute in 1847, using similar mechanics to his previous flutes. His flutes became popular, creating the structure for the concert flute we have today through revision as well as affecting other flute family mechanics from Boehm's initial ideas.
